Harlow’s manufacturing sector is diverse, forward-thinking and flourishing—spanning industries from aerospace to window production. Harlow has a history of innovation, most notably as the birthplace of fibre optic technology developed by Charles Kao and George Hockham at the former Standard Telecommunication Laboratories.  It continues to be a hub for cutting-edge industry.

The biggest new development for business in Harlow in recent years is Harlow Enterprise Zone.  It’s biggest development is Kao Park, built on the old STL site between Harlow and the M11.  Harlow council describe it as a “Premier business location for advanced manufacturing, life sciences and medical technology businesses, located along the UK’s Innovation Corridor.”  It combines Grade A office accommodation and a state-of-the-art data centre.  The majority of the space is in use. To ease access to Kao Park a new junction was added to the M11 – junction 7a, which opened to traffic in 2022. It  was funded through National Highways and Essex County Council.
